Under the direction of the Environmental Programs Manager, this position performs work within the operation of the Pope Douglas Solid Waste Management household hazardous waste and recycling programs. The duties involve the daily operation of the household hazardous waste collection facility, operation of equipment, provide work direction to full time and part time environmental attendant employees and other duties as assigned.
Perform or directs the maintenance of the administrative/household hazardous waste facility on a regular weekly basis as scheduled. Maintain or directs administrative/household hazardous waste facility parking lot and grounds including shoveling snow and operating a snow blower.
Examples of Work
• Efficiently and safely operates the household hazardous waste and recycling facility in accordance with the MPCA Regional Program Operations Manual.
• Assists and directs employees in receiving household hazardous waste from participants; pre-sort, bulk, and lab pack wastes; maintain proper storage of drums and containers; prepare, seal containers, and label containers. Maintaining a constant awareness of chemical hazards and safe handling practices.
• Performs and directs cleaning and maintenance duties, and other related projects necessary to maintain clean, safe, and orderly work conditions in the facility.
• Assists the general public with disposal of recyclable materials, provides information and guidance to customers
• Coordinates scheduling of vendors for shipping of materials including hazardous waste and fluorescent bulbs. Works with vendors, customers, and community members on scheduling drop off of products and mobile collection events.
• Develops and documents processes and procedures as well as provide daily work direction and on the job training for full time and part time employees in the household hazardous waste and recycling facilities.
• Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, or other documents and provides status reports pertaining to environmental center operations including readings, damage reports, shipment, timecards, and reports to appropriate personnel.
• Keeps inventory of supplies in stock.
• Operates forklifts, compactors, and various ancillary equipment to the Environmental Center.• Maintain a used product exchange area focusing primarily on, but not limited to, paint, stain, varnish, and various cleaning materials.
• Collects money and processes credit card transactions, issuing receipts to customers for payments received. Maintains accurate records of all transactions and ensures that relevant information is communicated to the appropriate personnel.

Education, Experience & Abilities Required
• Ability to complete MPCA training program and ongoing training updates.
• Ability to move collected wastes to proper storage area.
• Familiarity with Minnesota Hazardous Waste Regulations and knowledge of solid waste issues in the Pope and Douglas County area.
• Ability to effectively work with the public.
• Ability to work independently.
• Familiarity with common household products, their chemical properties, and environmental effects.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Valid Class D driver’s license
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds
• Must be able to climb ladders and steps
• Must be able to withstand extreme temperatures
• Must be able to wear a respirator
• Must be able to work in confined space areas.

Salary Range
$25.872 - $31.346 Per Hour, Non - Exempt
