Recycling Supports Our Economy - Learn more.

The following is a list of items accepted at the Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management - Recycling Center. If you have curbside recycling service, please contact your licensed hauler for information on what they accept for recycling.

Recycled items are generaly items such as metals, paper, glass, plastics, etc.

For hazardous items such as , batteries, oil, chemicals, etc., please view our hazardous waste guidlines.  Fluorescent Bulb and Electronics/E-Waste recycling options are available as well.

Metals

ALUMINUM CANS (separate)
Food/beverage cans and bottles. Empty and rinsed. Whole or flattened. Labels stay on.

NO: Redemption center/can buy-back on-site.

 

  Aluminum foil/pie pan (separate)

  Aluminum foil/pie pan recycling container onsite

  (keep separate from cans and tin sorts).

  Aerosol cans (separate)

  Aerosol (that are fully empty) recycling container onsite

  (keep separate from cans and tin sorts).

  Take partially full/etc aerosol cans to the

  Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

 

TIN FOOD CANS (separate)
Food/beverage cans and bottles. Empty and rinsed. Whole or flattened. Labels can stay on - we prefer to have them removed.

SCRAP METAL (separate)
Scrap metal or metal items that are 95 percent metal or more. Metal tools, kitchen utensils, lawn chairs (with cloth, vinyl removed), clothes hangers, screws, nails, metal toys, silverware, metal fencing, etc.

NO: Washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, water softeners, water heaters, dehumidifiers. If unsure please call.

SCRAP WIRE (separate)

Wires, extension cords, holiday/Christmas light strings. telephone wires, electrical cords from electronic devices.

 

Papers & Cardboards

   PAPER/BOXBOARD (separate)
   Newspapers/inserts, magazines, phonebooks, mail/envelopes,

   office/school papers, shredded paper in closed paper bag,

   egg cartons- no Styrofoam, softcover/paperback books.

   Boxboard includes: FLATTENED cereal/tissue/pasta/shoe boxes.

   NO: Boxes that come from the freezer.

   NO: Wax coated items (i.e. produce boxes).
   NO: Cartons (i.e. soy milk, juice boxes, egg substitute).

   NO: Bright/neon paper.
   NO: Photo paper.

   NO: Brown kraft or bubble wrap lined envelopes.
                                     NO: Hardcover books (torn out pages can be recycled).

 

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD (separate)
Flattened corrugated boxes. Flattened beer/pop/etc boxes.

Flattened boxes that come from the fridge. Brown paper grocery bags.

NO: Boxes that come from the freezer.

NO: Items from the 'Paper/Boxboard' Sort
NO: Wax coated items (i.e. produce boxes).
NO: Cartons (i.e. soy milk, juice boxes, egg substitute).

 

Glass Bottles

Food/beverage bottles and jars. Labels stay on.

NO: Caps/lids.
NO: Drinking glasses, mugs, dishes, cookware, pottery,

vases, window glass, mirror glass, vehicle windshields, etc.
NO: Lightbulbs.

 

Plastics

   #1, #2 PLASTIC (These plastics kept separate from #3-#6 plastic sort)
   Containers and bottles marked on the bottom with

   one of the plastic recycling triangle symbols.
   Caps/labels stay on.
   5 gallons and less w/metal handles removed.
   Well-drained oil bottles w/caps left on ok.
   Triple rinsed pesticide/chemical/etc bottles ok.

   #1 or #2 clamshells/cups/deli containers/etc.

   NO: Hoses, toys, etc.

 

Pope/Douglas also accepts Empty Pesticide Containers

from farmers/chemical applicators for recycling.  Learn more.

 

    #3, #4, #5, #6 PLASTIC (These plastics kept separate from the #1-#2 plastic sort)
    Containers and bottles marked on the bottom with

    one of the plastic recycling triangle symbols.
    Caps/labels stay on.
    Triple rinsed pesticide/chemical/etc bottles ok.

    #3, #4, #5, #6 clamshells/cups/deli containers/etc.

    'Election'-style plastic signs/Coroplast®/corrugated plastic sheets.

   NO: #7 plastics or Styrofoam.

   Recycle Packing Peanuts at UPS Store.

   Recycle Bubble Wrap at Alexandria Goodwill Store.

   NO: Plastic bags/packaging wrap/etc.
                                     NO: Plastic shopping bags/stretch plastic packaging/wrap/etc.

 

Miscellaneous Items

MEDIA RECYCLING
Recycle your old VHS and cassette tapes, LP records, 8-track tapes, LaserDiscs, DVD's, CD's and Blu-ray discs. (drop off at Administrative Offices)

NO: player devices.

Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management does not accept e-waste.
