Motor Oil and Filter Disposal

Waste oil and filters should not be placed in the regular garbage.  Dumping oil on the ground leads to groundwater pollution.  Bring in waste oil, gasoline and filters for proper disposal.

Minnesota Statutes §115A.916 prohibits the disposal of motor oil on land, in the sewer system, or with solid waste. Improper disposal of oil and other automotive lubricants can harm vegetation and pollute water supplies.

The prohibition also includes brake fluid, power steering fluid and transmission fluid.

Pope/Douglas Disposal Option

Accepted free for disposal at the South end of the Pope/Douglas Recycling Center.

The used motor oil must be in dumpable containers no larger than five gallons in size.

Crankcase oil, motor oil, gasoline and transmission fluid are also accepted in the oil tank.

Contaminated oil or brake fluid must be taken to the HHW Collection Facility.

Other Disposal Options

Local service stations and oil change businesses also accept waste oil and filters.

Fees may apply for filter disposal.

Vegetable Oil and Grease

Pope/Douglas does not accept vegetable oils, fryer oil and related grease.

Small amounts can be placed in your regular trash.

Larger quantities should have an on-site dumpster located at your business for oil/grease.
